My Final Reflections

Truth to be told, I think that there is a part of me that is still in denial that this semester is nearing its end. It seems that the weeks in this semester literally just flew by and now, there are only 2 more days before I reach the end of my third year. Nonetheless, this has been a very enjoyable semester for me and I have to admit that one of the major reasons is due to this quirky little module called Professional Communications. For me, some of the main highlights of this semester came from our weekly four hours tutorial/lecture where all the "serious fun" took place. I especially enjoyed the many mind-stimulating discussions in class and who could ever forget the mock interviews? Haha. Thanks to all the people who was interviewed by Yuka, Evelia and me (you know who you are) for taking my jabs stoically even though I was quite a b*tch during your interviews. :) That aside, I also enjoyed all of our weekly blogging where I got the chance to write my own thoughts and read the blogs of others.

I wrote in my second post about the importance of oral and written communication to me. Throughout the subsequent 12 weeks however, this module made me realize that there is so much more to the term "communication" than just oral and written communication. One such example is the very interesting non-verbal communication where a simple action such as a thumbs-up can have several meanings in different countries. It was certainly a wake-up call to how limited my knowledge was regarding "effective communication" prior to this module.

There is so much more to "communication" than just being a noun

Looking back at all my previous posts, I have definitely matured as a person and I think that this is evident in my writing and more importantly, my thinking. My first post was actually my own personal post and it was about me taking the first step in the journey to be a successful and professional communicator. Have I reached the end of the journey? The answer is an emphatic "no" as I realize that I still have much work to do before being able to reach my goal. Nevertheless, I do believe that I am making good progress in this journey of mine with the knowledge and experience gained from this course.

I still remember that at the start of the semester when I decided to take this module, a few of friends were quite surprised and tried talking me out of it as they think that this would be a boring and very taxing module. They were also quite worried about the workload and tried to get me to change my mind. However, I really am glad that in the end, I went on with my initial decision to take ES2007S. I would not have the chance to learn so much and meet a great group of people if I had not taken this module.

It has really been a pleasure to be part of your class, Brad. And I am glad that I had the chance to share this class with a group of highly fun and amazing individuals too. Great job guys and gals of group 9! It has been an honor getting to know all of you. :) All the best in whatever you do in the future and see you around NUS.

  1. Dear Wee Siong,
I totally agree with everything you said. Even my friends were trying to talk me out of studying this module but I decided to go ahead with it. I am definitely not regretting studying this module as it has definitely improved my communication skills. True enough it had a lot of assignments and homework to be done but it was definitely the most fun-filled 4-hour class that I have been to in NUS. Just like you, I still cannot believe that it has all come to an end and Fridays 12-2 class will be my last undergrad class in NUS. All the best to you wee siong.

Yup, there was definitely no regrets whatsoever with me taking this module. I just wish that this semester could have been longer though and will definitely miss all of you once this term ends.

  3. Dear Wee Siong

I am sure that you have the ability to be a successful and professional communicator. Your presentation is prove that you are near your goal. Communication is indeed a complex issue that is not easily understood. Everyday we learn new things about others which will change the way we communicate with them. I think the ability to learn and react to different situations is the key to effective communications. Continue striving for this neverending process and you will become a successful communicator.

    Cheers

  5. Hey blogging buddy!

It was very very nice to have you around in this module as my blogging buddy. Thank you for all the feedback about my posts, and it was great to have another perspective.

Indeed, communication has so many facets to it, and I share the same learning point as you. Communication involves more than just oral and written interaction, all the non-verbals are important as well. I have learnt so much about non-verbals this semester.

Thank you for making a big difference in my ES2007S this semester, let's keep in contact even after this semester!

  6. Hi Wee Siong,
This is a great post. You have summarized each of the section under this module very well. I really admire your leadership through the interaction of writing research report and oral presentation. You able to guide us through the past 12 weeks. I get to know you more and deeply after ES2007S. All the best!

  7. Dear Good-looking perfectionist friend,

I have the same disbelief as you that the semester is coming to an end. It seems as though time flies in the speed of light! Initially, I was a bit worried when I took this module as I have received many reviews from my other friends saying that I would be having a very busy semester due the heavy workload from this module. Indeed, what they said is true because this is the busiest semester that I ever had. However, looking back, I do not regret for bidding this module. Although the workload was rather heavy, the skills, the experiences, the knowledge and the friends that I gained from this course outweigh the pile of assignments that I needed to do to pass this. Overall, ES2007S is an interesting and fun communication module and I am glad that I have taken it with you despite the negative remarks that I got from my other friends. I hope this course has moulded you to be a more effective communicator.

  8. Hi all,

Once again, thanks for all the hard work in class and for making ES2007S such a fun module.

@Daniel: The feeling is mutual my blogging buddy. Thanks once again and will definitely keep in contact even after this semester.

@Cher: Thanks for your contributions too and wish you the very best in your future.

@Sau Yeen: I am also glad you took this course or I would have missed having an opportunity to work with you. Thanks again for everything and I hope you gained as much as I did from this course too.

  9. Hey Wee Siong!

I have to agree with you this module has been very enjoyable especially with Brad and our class of very interesting people. =D I am very glad to get to know the class better through our weekly discussions and various activities, and I must say I definitely got to see a different side of you! What with all the “role-playing” during the mock job interviews ands also the statement you made with regards to your looks (See Sau Yeen’s comments haha). And to think I thought you were a shy and reserved person from the first impression!

All the best to your remaining one year in NUS and may you continue to induce laughter in others’ lives! (:

  10. Hey Wee Siong,

You are definitely one character hard to forget from this class, watching you evolve from a "mr nice guy"- which you usually are of course- to "super baddie" during the mock interview! It was an incredible experience intereacting with classmates from different nationality and culture. I dare to say that this is one of the best module I have had taken in NUS, and I'm sure allof us are going to miss this class and Brad of course as much as you do=)

Do keep in touch yah, will be looking forward to joining your facebook group!

    xoxo

  11. Hi Wee Siong,

I agree with you on how you describe about the knowledge gain from this module. Initially you appear as a quite and not very outstanding person. But as the week pass; you kind of speak up more. I got to work with you during the last lesson. We gossip as though we had known each other for so long. You’re really approachable. Thanks for creating the group on facebook. Hope to keep in touch with all of you. All the best for your future.

  12. Hello Wee Siong,

Is the semester coming to an end? No right? haha. Thumbs up for not putting an end to learning. Many people I know did that and stopped improving. I see the potential in you being more than a bit**y interviewer. (: However, maybe you would like to talk more specifically about what we have done? Perhaps on the report or maybe elaborate more on our intercultural learning? (: We'll keep in touch even after the module. Holiday's coming! woohoo!

p.s. I just wrote my last post. can read when you are sick of studying (:

  13. THANKS, Wee Siong, for this detailed post and for doing a masterful job this term, not just in your CA but also in helping everyone bond in this class (even as the "interviewer from hell"). That's communication skills at their finest.

We'll keep in touch and hopefully meet again in the future. After all, G9 can't fold up its tent that easily!

  14. Hi all,

Thanks for all your comments and glad that all of you felt the same as I did towards this module. Really had some great time during our classes and it is all thanks to every single unique individual in class. We will definitely keep in touch right? Well, here is wishing everyone all the best in the coming exams and may you stay on the right side of the normal curve of your modules. :)

    Best regards,

  15. Hey Wee Siong,

I love that poem at the end. I did an analysis of it when I took Introduction to Literary Studies! I must say, that I am still thanking God that I was chosen first to be interviewed, on the first day when you weren't that 'mean'.

I seriously think if all else fails (touch wood) you can be an actor! Of course, in real life, you're a really sweet guy. I think I mentioned before, during the job interview presentation, I kept looking at you because I thought you were the most responsive and attentive listener! It really encouraged me and I thank you for that. You seem to give the person speaking your utmost attention everytime. That is really difficult to do!

I wish you all the best for the exams, and your future endeavours as well!!

  16. Hello WeeSiong!

I certainly share the same sentiments with ou, cant believe that the semester and our ES2007S lesson has ended. It has been a real joy having you around in class, witnessing your outstanding performance duing the interviews, and most importantly you sharing your thoughts and comment during lessons.

You are an extremely confident person, and I do see so much in you! All the best to your future studies, and see you around in schools (and pgp corridors maybe?heh).
